Remember in high school when the English teacher made you write that personal statement? Well, I wrote it. All five paragraphs of it.
Then I threw it away. I always felt that if someone wants to get to know me, they should simply look at my life. They should look me in the eyes and feel what I feel. If you are reading this, then you may be ready to understand what I experience daily.
But why should you want to read? Is my life different than yours? Is my life different than that of John Jacob Jingleheimerschmidt?
Meet CJ Donald. Centre College sophomore from the great city of Memphis. Musician. Writer. Thinker.
I wear long socks, but I dislike long shirts. I like Pop-Tarts but I have never finished Mary Poppins. I like to think that I dress well, but I think bow ties are a bit pretentious. I love God and I love Mankind, but I sometimes find people confusing. I think Batman is better than Superman, but the villains have more interesting back stories. I have a database of Bill Cosby quotes and motivational quotes on tap 24/7. I think that guy in Tiananmen Square had the right idea. Tommy Pickles was the best character on TV in 1992, simply because he wore the same shirt every day. I am restless, but I am not a worrier. I don’t like politicians and I don’t like politically correct terms. For example: I find African-American to be a ridiculous euphemism, unless the person in question was actually born on the Dark Continent and is now an American citizen. I see no problem with Negro; I see less issue with black. I am a black man at a predominately white school in a state where 8% identity as black. I think Malcolm Little finally got it right in April 1964. I also think that Ronald Reagan was correct when he said, “Don’t be afraid to see what you see.” I like sports and music. In fact, I only like sports and music. I live my life like Michael Jordan lived his life on June 11, 1997.
I am CJ Donald.
